Ungrounded or 2-Prong Outlets: What Are Your Options?
If you live in an older home, you may still have some two-prong outlets. Or maybe a home inspector has told you that some of your three-prong outlets are ungrounded.
This is common in older homes, and it does not always mean the whole house needs to be rewired.
There are a few ways to deal with ungrounded outlets. Some are better long-term solutions than others. Here are the main options.
First, What Does “Ungrounded” Mean?
Modern electrical wiring normally includes a ground wire. This ground provides a safe path for electricity if something goes wrong with an appliance or electrical device.
Many older homes were wired without this ground wire. That is why older outlets often have only two slots instead of three.
The third hole on a modern outlet is for the ground.
Option 1: Rewire the Circuit — The Best Solution
The best way to deal with ungrounded outlets is to replace the old wiring with new wiring that includes a ground.
This gives you a true grounded outlet and is the best long-term solution.
If your home has many ungrounded outlets, rewiring can also be a chance to add outlets where you need them and update older wiring at the same time.
The downside is cost.
Running new wires through a finished home takes more time and labour. Depending on how the home is built, small areas of walls or ceilings may also need to be opened.
For these reasons, rewiring is usually the most expensive option. But when it makes sense for the home and the budget, it is the option we recommend first.
Option 2: Add GFCI Protection
If rewiring is not practical, GFCI protection can often be used as another option.
A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) is designed to quickly shut off power if it senses electricity going somewhere it shouldn't. This helps protect people from electrical shock.
With the proper GFCI protection, three-prong outlets can be used on an older ungrounded circuit without having to rewire the whole circuit.
There is one important thing to understand:
GFCI protection does not create a ground.
The outlet may have three prongs and GFCI protection, but there is still no ground wire running back to the electrical panel.
For many situations, this can be a practical way to upgrade older outlets when rewiring isn't in the budget.
Where Can the GFCI Protection Be Installed?
You don't necessarily need a GFCI receptacle at every outlet.
Depending on the home and how the circuit is wired, the protection can be installed in a few different places:
In the electrical panel with a GFCI breaker.
At the electrical panel with a blank-face or dead-front GFCI device.
At the first outlet on the circuit with a GFCI receptacle that also protects the outlets after it.
An electrician can determine which method works best for the existing wiring.
Option 3: Keep the Existing 2-Prong Outlet
Sometimes the simplest option is to leave the two-prong outlet alone.
If the outlet and existing wiring are in good condition and you only need it for equipment with a two-prong plug, there may be no reason to replace it just because it looks old.
A two-prong outlet also makes it clear that there is no ground available.
What you shouldn't do is replace it with a regular three-prong outlet without making the other changes needed.
What If You Already Have 3-Prong Outlets That Are Ungrounded?
This is something that often comes up during a home inspection.
A three-prong outlet may look modern, but that doesn't always mean it has a ground.
At some point, someone may have replaced the original two-prong outlet with a three-prong outlet without properly upgrading the wiring or adding the required protection.
Changing the outlet does not add a ground.
This is why a home inspector may identify an “ungrounded receptacle” even though you can clearly see three holes in the outlet.

Which Option Is Right for Your Home?
There isn't one answer for every older home.
If you're renovating, plan to stay in the home for a long time, or want the most complete solution, new grounded wiring is the best option.
If rewiring isn't practical right now, GFCI protection can be a good alternative when installed correctly.
And in some locations, keeping the original two-prong outlet may make sense.
What we don't recommend is simply replacing an old two-prong outlet with a regular three-prong outlet and assuming the problem has been fixed.
The Bottom Line
Finding out that your home has ungrounded outlets can sound like a big problem. It doesn't necessarily mean you need to rewire your entire house.
You have options.
Rewiring with new grounded wiring is the best long-term solution, but it is also the most expensive. GFCI protection can be a practical alternative without opening up large parts of a finished home. And sometimes an existing two-prong outlet can simply stay where it is.
The important thing is knowing what wiring you have first. From there, you can choose the solution that makes the most sense for your home and your budget.
